KesselsKramer, in collaboration with Stephen Wirtz Gallery & independent curators, Pascale Georgiev & Kingston Trinder, are immensely pleased to present The Jangs by Michael Jang.
Jang began The Jangs series one summer in 1973, whilst vacationing at the Pacifica, California house of Jang relatives. Attending Cal Arts at the time, & avowedly influenced by the work of Lee Friedlander & Garry Winogrand, Jang spent that summer documenting the surreal, often comical domesticity of Aunt Lucy, Uncle Monroe, & his three cousins, Ted, Chris & Cynthia.
The series then developed to encompass Jang’s extended relatives, with Dorothy, Kevin, Victor, Woodrow, & Gaynor, all documented, occasionally, to their chagrin.
Jang revealed nothing of his vast & ever-expanding archive for almost forty years until 2003, when he submitted a number of images, including The Jangs, for consideration to San Franciscoʼs Museum of Modern Art, who immediately acquired several of these for their permanent collection.
Michael Jang spent his boyhood in the Northern Californian Gold Rush town of Marysville. Receiving a BFA at Cal Arts, & an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, Jang continues to publish & exhibit internationally. He resides in San Francisco.
The Jangs X Los Angeles is Jang’s first Los Angeles exhibition.
KesselsKramer is located at 963 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
