    Ray’s Reports

It’s been a while since working on my own stuff, I started making some layouts and it multiplied into a bunch of zines. That is what is fun about zines over books, it can be very loose and voluminous. Also cheap to produce. Here are the first two. More to come.

    Hamburger Eyes No. 52

Pleased to announce our latest issue, Hamburger Eyes No. 52. You’ll notice more size, more pages, and more photographers. We found out that with the print shop we use, it’s actually cheaper to use one of their default paper sizes than to use our own regular custom paper size. This size is wider and taller and happens to be a size we have used in the past so it will be familiar. We also went with a lighter weight paper, trying to get it to lay flat when opened but also more savings. All of this means we can take that extra dough and add more pages. We are finally back up to 100 pages where we belong.

This issue features photographers based in Sacramento, Chicago, Tampa, Quebec, Rome, Le Vigan, and Thessaloniki.

    Check it out.

    EXPOSURE

We got asked to be part of this year’s EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL which takes place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. While bummed that we couldn’t go there because of contagious virus variants, we are still excited to be involved.

We sent around 200 photos which they installed at Contemporary Calgary. Photos by David Catalano, David Kaplan, Don Standing, Chris Leskovsek, Reuben Radding, David Uzzardi, David Root, Sal Hernandez, Tom Souzer, Andrea Lavezzaro, Troy Holden, Alex Herzog, Uri Korn, Mathieu Van Assche, Simon Vansteenwinckel, Oscar Mendoza, Ryan Florig, and Ray Potes.

    Install photos by Louie Villanueva

Also, we are doing an online presentation as part of this photo fest. The first half will be me talking about not sure what yet, mostly showing a slide show of photos and layouts spanning the entire history of Hamburger Eyes. Then the second half will be Q+A. You are all invited! You have to register though. It’s this Sunday, Feb 13 2022. Noon PST. It’s free.

    PICTURE US

    PICTURE US
PHOTOGRAPHERS ON THE ASIAN-AMERICAN & PACIFIC ISLANDER EXPERIENCE

“PICTURE US is an exploration; it is an honest window into the corners of the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience during a year of collective trauma, as our community was targeted as the cause for the COVID-19 pandemic. It is an inquiry into the differential tension between our own understanding of how the world sees us and how we see ourselves as a community. Picture a world where our identities and communities are able to be in mainstream media and be seen for all its excellence. That’s not the moment we live in, but in this publication that is what we aim to capture and celebrate. As artists and as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: PICTURE US, as we picture ourselves.” – Jennelyn Tumalad

30% of proceeds will be donated to the Asian Prisoners Support Committee. Founded in 2002, the APSC is one of the few organizations in the country dedicated to providing services to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are incarcerated and formerly incarcerated. The organization, led by formerly incarcerated AAPIs, works primarily with the San Quentin and Solano state prison populations and the re-entry population in Oakland and nearby.
